Water Treatment: Mountain Point Water treatment Plant
Water taken from this source is treated at the Mountain Point Water Treatment Plant that uses sand type water filtration process and utilizes chlorine as the distribution disinfectant. Currently the plant is undergoing SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) upgrades to help with automation to increase water production reliability and ensure superior water quality while reducing operational costs. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
Water distribution main are mostly Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) but newer sections being installed are HDPE. HDPE stands for High Density Polyethylene, a more durable, corrosion-resistant recyclable material. This material is also cheaper that ductile iron and better suited to Ketchikan's harsh subsurface conditions and is the preferred worldwide water main material in use today. All future expansions and repairs will be made with this piping material.
Making the Connection:
Public Works requires a permit to connect to the water system.
